Grillin’ Out at SPACE, Inc.

What do you get when you combine 70-degree weather with team members’ spontaneity?  A hotdog cookout at lunch time!

After an extremely gruelling winter, Friday dawned sunny and warm.    As our weekly management meeting drew to a close, we looked out the window and noticed one of our warehouse guys scrubbing out a grill.  In the meantime, members of the administration team ran to the store to pick up the necessary eats and sent out email invitations to the rest of the team.

Soon the smell of grilling hot dogs filled the warehouse and permeated the office.   Open space in the warehouse was outfitted with a few tables and chairs of varying makes and models (as a Haworth furniture dealership, we have these readily available).  Gradually, team members filtered out to sit in the sun, watch Chef Jacques turn the hot dogs, and eat their fill.

This simple act of an “instant picnic” affirms the camaraderie and team spirit at SPACE.  What promotes contagious positivity more than sunshine, grilling, and laughing.   Throughout the week there are multiple opportunities for sales, design, and administrative staff to dine together.  What made the cookout special is that it included, and, in fact, was hosted by, our warehouse/install crew.   People from all departments joined the festivities, which subliminally reinforced the team bond.

Wonder what’s going to happen when we get 80-degree weather?

SPACE Inc MS Walk Is Total Teamwork

April 25th is MS Walk Day in Midland MI.   Each year SPACE team members raise donations to support research for a cure for multiple sclerosis.   This year SPACE Inc will be well represented both on the course and behind the scenes.

We are fielding our largest team ever.   With 16 employees and their family members, the SPACE contingent will number about 40.  Team members who are unable to walk that day participate by pledging funds to help walking team members reach their goal.

The day of the event we will meet at Central Middle School, register, turn in our pledges, have our team picture taken, and hit the course.   We may straggle along the way, but at the end, we’ll meet up to determine how many will continue on to a group breakfast.  (This last part is the reason some walkers participate in the first place!)

All in all, this is a win-win-win event.  The National MS Society benefits from our donations, our SPACE team members participate in a team-building/team-strengthening event, and the walkers get healthy exercise.

There’s another win in this that’s very personal to me:  my daughter has MS.  The National MS Society medical services allowed her to continue her therapy even though she’d been laid off and couldn’t pay for the injections.

The overwhelming commitment my SPACE coworkers and the owners have toward this event make me proud to work at such a caring company.   Thank you all.

Using “Best Practice” to Continually Improve

Continual improvement through more efficient use of time, more effective processes and procedures, better communication, and a myriad of other opportunities makes SPACE, Inc. a vibrant, growing company.   Improving ourselves and our company takes many forms and can range from minor tweaks to major changes in how we do business.

Over the years SPACE team members have implemented processes and suggested improvements that have led to “Best Practice” status in our company.   One of the best practice procedures we developed, our installation packet, has been adopted by others in our industry and applauded by our subcontractors.

How and where do you find potential best-practice applications?  SPACE management encourages benchmarking other companies that do something particularly well.   Consultants have been used to improve our operations and provide personal growth.  SPACE employees attend seminars and training opportunities that foster development and implementation of process changes and time-saving techniques.  SPACE team members attend industry product training, application conventions, and business expos to network, learn, and adapt suggestions and recommendations to our way of doing business.   Continual self-improvement is also encouraged and opportunities are provided by SPACE to enhance communication techniques, improve people skills, and build team members’ knowledge base.

SPACE, Inc., as a Preferred Dealer for Haworth products, has access to the Dealer Best Practices site Haworth sponsors.   This forum allows us to see what tools other dealerships use as their best practice.   It prevents wasting time re-inventing the wheel and provides optimal methods for enhancing business performance.

There’s no growth without change.  Using best-practice methodology to create change ensures that we’re doing something already proven to work successfully.

The Effect of Workplace Environment on Organizational Performance

Every organization faces the challenge of providing to each of its employees, a functional, clean and safe working environment. And every organization will undoubtedly be forced at some point, to take on the task of “updating” the office in one of the following ways: giving it a facelift, tackling a total renovation, moving to a new space, or (the most exciting/daunting)… building a brand new building!

No matter the method, the largest concern is the price tag associated with the changes. In an effort to keep the costs down, often the aesthetic of the office is needlessly compromised. There are a variety of finish options, patterns, and colors which are available at a number of price points. The key is selecting a cohesive package within your budget that best represents your organization. Painting a wall costs the same whether it is “cool institutional” gray or a “warm inviting” earth tone; both have an important impact on the productivity and morale of staff and the corporate vision and client perception. Do you want your staff to feel valued? What is the image you want to convey to your customers? Please check out this publication from Haworth on the effect of the facility and work environment on organizational performance.

Let SPACE Inc. help you get the most out of your budget for your next interiors project!

Financial Dashboard as a Team-building Tool

Like most companies, SPACE, Inc. produces monthly financial reports.  Early in our history we presented the income statement at monthly meetings and watched everyone’s eyes glaze over.   It was too much information with little meaning for individual team members.

Now we use a “dashboard” report and present it quarterly.  The report shows revenues, net profits, days outstanding for accounts receivable, and ratios, as well as snapshots of other data pertinent to our dealership.   We use OFDA benchmarks to track our progress by comparison to high-profit dealers.

Because the dashboard highlights those balance sheet and income statement items that directly impact our team’s bonus program, each team member can readily see how we’re tracking for bonus dollars.  They can also see how reducing AR days outstanding impacts and improves cashflow.  By comparing us to the benchmarks in our industry, we keep focused and on track to meet or exceed industry standards.  If any team member wants more in-depth information, the financials are available for them to discuss with their manager.

With this open-book policy our team is well aware of our progress toward goals, of their actions’ impact on the numbers, and the numbers’ impact on bonus-ability.
