Beware of Rocker Crossings

Here in Michigan we’re used to seeing deer on the road, sometimes even a cow.  This time of year, we also see a lot of road kill as animals come out of hibernation and begin to move.  But a rocking chair!  Really???

Julia was on her way into work, cruising along on US-10 as usual.  She rounded a curve and was faced by a free-range rocking chair in her path!  She couldn’t swerve into the next lane because of traffic, so she had to hit it.   After the impact, she pulled to the side of the road to assess the damage and call the police.

Car after car sped by her without stopping to see if she was all right.  Then, along came John.  He didn’t even realize it was Julia until he got out of his vehicle and approached the scene.  Julia was shaken up and her vehicle was damaged, but driveable.  John waited with Julia until the police arrived and then followed her into work.

It’s gratifying that SPACE has such selfless and considerate team members like John.  He exemplifies our core values.

Meanwhile, Julia has the distinction of having the most unique police and insurance reports of the day!

Add Recycling Containers in Your Office Breakroom of Cafeteria

When getting ready to remodel your office environment, think closely about your recycling needs in the individual offices, the common areas and the break room.  There is a company called Glassform that offers fiberglass recycling containers for your office or commercial facility.  The recycling containers “are available in round and square (soft corners)…Containers are molded in fire resistant pigmented polyester resin reinforced fiberglass.”

The containers come in a variety of colors and because they are done in fiberglass work best in a contemporary décor.  They accommodate a variety of products including cans, plastics, glass and paper materials.  This is one of those little details that sometimes goes missing when you start to think about redecorating or remodeling your office.

Happy Birthday to Us!

Once upon a time there were two women who saw an opportunity and jumped in with both feet.  Through hard work, long hours, continuous learning, and family support, Kathie and Lisa grew that opportunity into a “real” company.   I was lucky enough to be in at the beginning to watch the transformation.  2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the founding of SPACE, Inc., and we’ve come a long way, baby!

In 1995 SPACE opened its doors on a showroom that was cement floors, unfinished drywall, two computers, and a typewriter.  With only three of us on board, we all wore many hats.  Kathie was salesperson, spokesperson, and negotiator; Lisa was salesperson, designer, benefits manager; I was receptionist, order entry, accountant, warehouse manager.  The original office furniture consisted of card tables, cardboard files, and no walls.

After a few months Lisa had designed a beautiful showroom and we actually had real offices.    Orders, delivery tickets, and invoices were typed up on the typewriter until we got Team Design.  Accounting was a manual exercise up to that point, too.   When we first had computers, they weren’t networked, so we shared documents by swapping floppy disks back and forth.

Within the first year, 2 more people were hired and SPACE was on its way.  In the second year, SPACE opened another location in Flint.  In subsequent years we expanded the office, added account managers, designers, support staff, and brought install in-house.  Part of the warehouse was closed in to add a sales/design area to the existing office.  That created a second floor that  was and is used as a conference room.   When the second tenant in the building vacated the premises, SPACE took over the whole facility, doubling the warehouse space and adding much-needed office space.

While all this was going on, SPACE became one of Michigan’s “50 Companies To Watch,” the staff grew to 30, and technology bloomed.  Due to the diligence and opportunistic eye of Stacy, our New Business Development guru, SPACE acquired a GSA contract and a BPA with the Department of Health and Human Services.  That put SPACE in the national arena.

At our team meeting in March, Kathie and Lisa were presented with a birthday cake and blew out the 15 candle to the applause of the staff.  We didn’t sing “Happy Birthday”, but we hope there are many more!

National Volunteer Week 2010

April 18-24 marks this year’s National Volunteer Week.  It’s an opportunity that “celebrates ordinary people doing extraordinary things to improve communities” according to the Points of Light Institute.  In our community it means recognizing those people, businesses, and agency advocates who work tirelessly to make it better in Midland County.

SPACE, Inc. has a community service core value that encourages employee involvement.  The United Way of Midland County Volunteer Center provides several opportunities throughout the year for SPACE employees to make an impact and we take advantage of it!  Day of Caring, Rake a Difference, Season of Caring, Sharing Tree, and many more events see SPACE employees and trucks helping out.

This year’s Volunteer Week will see a new event called “Spirit of the Community” that will bring together all the recognition events usually held during the week and add a couple of new ones.  Several awards will be given, including Heart of the Community, Shining Star, and the Torch Bearer Award.  Volunteens will also be recognized for their contributions and service.   The evening event will take place on April 20th at the Great Hall.

We don’t know who the winners of all the awards will be, but that’s not why we volunteer anyway.  SPACE employees give of their time and talents regardless of any recognition.  It’s nice to know, though, that there’s a whole week devoted to demonstrating how volunteers are appreciated and valued.
