Choosing a Qualified Interior Designer for Your Office Interior

Sunday Mar 14, 2010

“The Professional Interior Designer is qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces.”  That is the definition of an interior designer on the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) website.  It is a very important that you understand this definition before you select a designer for your office interiors.

  • Education.  Some universities have programs for interior design degrees.  In Michigan we have Western Michigan University, Michigan State and Central Michigan to name just a few.  In addition, some community colleges have associates degrees in interior design.  At SPACE we prefer our designers to have a four year degree and graduate in the top of their class.  We don’t hire anyone without a degree.
  • Experience.  As comprehensive as the interior design education can be you still want to make sure that you are getting a seasoned designer.  Ask to see his or her portfolio of work and ask for references.  Or, when you see an office interior that you particularly like ask the name of the designer.  Keep the information on file until you are ready to interview for your expansion, renovation or building project.
  • Examination.  Most people don’t know that there is a test that professional interior designers must pass before they can call themselves a professional interior designer.  It is called the NCIDQ.  Before a designer may apply to take the test he or she needs to have a four year degree and a minimum of two years or experience or a two year degree with a minimum of four years of experience. When a designer passes this test they are eligible to join either IIDA or the American Society of Interior Designer (ASID).  Look for the IIDA or ASID designation after their name on their business cards.  If you see this designation you will know that this designer has passed all of the examination requirements on the NCIDQ and is considered a professional interior designer.

Find Your Level Designer Diana Robinson brings unique and sophisticated customizable designs which can be applied to a wide range of substrate materials.  With applications for healthcare, education, corporate office interiors, hospitality, government and more, the Level collection of digitally produced wallcoverings offers almost limitless creative opportunity for the design community.

What kind of material can I print on?  A wide range of materials, both specialty and standard vinyl, are available on which your Level design can be printed:

Recycled Type II vinyls
Type II vinyls (smooth, stipple, & canvas)
Burlaps, silks, jutes, & paperweaves
Wood veneers
Acoustic sound control fabric
Glass beads
Window films
Commercial pressure sensitive films

Flourish - Application 2 Window Film

Flourish - Application 2 Window Film

What I love about this concept is that you can take the base design and customize it for your application.  The two “Flourish” images shown above are actually the same design - the first highlights one distinct feature of the pattern and is applied to a recycled type 2 vinyl, and the second utilizes the entire pattern and is applied to a window film.  Two very unique design elements!  For information on this and other wallcovering ideas, contact SPACE Inc today!

Enhance Your Office Interior Design by Using Decorative Mirrors

Contemporary Mirror Enhances Office Interior Design

Contemporary Mirror Enhances Office Interior Design

Most of us think of artwork when we think of wall decor for our office interiors and that is a very good option.  There is another option that is not as “top of mind” when it comes to designing your office interiors and that is the use of decorative mirrors.

Mirrors are used extensively in hospitality design.  You’ll see wonderful pieces throughout hotels and restaurants.  They aren’t as widely used in office design but can be a wonderful alternative.  Our designers at SPACE, Incorporated have a mirror source that provides all of the framing options we need for our diverse client base.  Majestic Mirror and Frame provides just the right blend of frame quality and options that are perfect for any office interior design solution we want to create.

Lounge Seating in Office Interiors Needs Flexibility

Sunday Feb 28, 2010

Flexibility, modularity, and consistency of design.  All of these criteria are required when you are selecting lounge seating for your office reception area or lounge seating area.  Too many times we see reception seating that doesn’t allow for any reconfiguration of the space and that isn’t good.  Our design team at SPACE, Inc. is always looking for products that allow our client’s offices to grow and change as their businesses grow and change.  With the growing emphasis on sustainability it just makes sense to select products that can be reused or re-purposed as the needs evolve.  Here is a video of the National Swift modular seating products.  They can be reconfigured in a variety of ways that adapt to the changing needs of reception and lounge areas and make sense for these types of areas.

Timberlane 3/4 Back

Timberlane 3/4 Back

Timberlane has long been a great-looking, cost-effective wood guest chair offered by National Office Furniture.  Recently, the line has been enhanced and additions have been made to the Timberlane family that make it appropriate for specification in the healthcare market.  A Bariatric chair, ganging seating and tables, as well as my favorite, the 3/4 fabric back have been added to the line.  Have you ever noticed the “ick” that collects in the crevice where the seat of your chair meets its back??  More importantly, does your janitorial staff notice to clean it out?  Probably not.  The 3/4 back creates a gap between the seat and back and keeps your seat cleaner, longer.  Contact SPACE Inc today for more information on this and other products!
