Holiday Decorations = Scholarships???

Yes, it’s true!  The Zonta Club of Midland’s annual fundraiser, Homewalk, makes it happen.

Here’s how it works.  Zonta is an international service organization of business and professional women working to advance the status of women world-wide.  Our local chapter starts in early spring to secure 5 or 6 homes to be exhibited as part of Homewalk.  Once the homeowners are on board, they are matched with local design firms and decorators to map out how best to decorate their homes for the holidays.  The homeowners agree to open their homes for 2 days on a December weekend to allow the public to visit and view unique and beautiful homes fully decorated for the holidays.

The entire Zonta club membership serves as volunteer hostesses at each home, ensuring the safety and security of both visitors’ and homeowners’ property while explaining the history of the home.  A Zonta member may also recruit non-Zontians as hostesses.  That’s where the SPACE team comes in.

SPACE has two team members who are Zonta members.  Several other SPACE employees volunteer to work one, or even two, 4-hour shifts as invited volunteers.  Those team members who don’t participate in the walk may purchase raffle tickets instead, which also goes to fund Zonta causes.

Homewalk proceeds go directly to a scholarship fund that helps six young women each year advance their education.  Two of 2009′s local scholarship recipients have gone on to win another scholarship at the district level.  One of them became only one of twelve women around the world to receive a $5000 scholarship at the international level.  For further details about these amazing young women and the impact they’re having on the world, check out the October and November newsletters under our Newsletter tab on the Zonta website.

This year’s Homewalk will be the weekend of December 5th and 6th from 1:00-5:00 each day.   So put on your festive faces and come out and enjoy the holiday scenery!

Personal Accountability – Leadership at all Levels

Personal Accountability.

The willingness to claim 100% ownership for the results provided as a consequence of your involvement, both individually and collectively with others.

While an individual may have a responsibility to accomplish a task we all should have a sense of personal accountability to give guidance in when and how the task may be preformed. We can sit back and wait or we can intervene. While we may not actually perform the task when we intervene and give guidance our actions may lead to the task being accomplished.

Personal accountability is opportunity. It is opportunity to contribute to the organization of which we are a part.

We all need to take this approach in our everyday lives. Be accountable, intervene, give guidance whenever you can.

2009 United Way Campaign Hits the Mark and Then Some

It was reported here last week that our SPACE team United Way campaign concluded successfully by exceeding our goal by $300.  This past Thursday the community campaign results were announced in an event held at Midland Center for the Arts.

Drum roll, please……

Once again the community came together to produce amazing results.   The $4.8 million goal was met and passed by almost $50,000!!

A video presentation highlighted people in our community impacted by the services and programs supported by United Way campaign dollars.  This is where you really see how you make a difference.   (Video link will be in a future blog.  In the meantime, here’s a written preview.)

A tearful woman explained how she finally felt safe when she went to Shelterhouse.  As she passed through each door, it was locked behind her.  That’s when she truly felt she wouldn’t be hurt any more.

An older man told how he and his wife enjoyed building planes, flying them together (she drove, he navigated), and traveling extensively.  They don’t do those things any more because his wife has Alzheimer’s.  He expressed his appreciation for the Seasons program offered by Senior Services Midland County Council on Aging.  It’s an adult day program that helps her maintain her dignity and stay active and alert.

The SPACE team can be proud to know they are helping people just like this every day through their donations to our United Way campaign.  SPACE is part of the Retail and Services Division of the campaign and that division surpassed it’s goal by 38% !  And SPACE helped make that happen.  Thank you to everyone on the team who committed to making a difference in our communities.

Be Aware Of Safety Where Ever You Are.

In our operations group safety is always a concern. We pride ourselves on working effectively as well as safely. I want to once again drive home the need to not only be aware of safety at work but also in your every day lives. Firearm season here in Michigan starts on November 15th. I want to share a few safety tips for those who are taking to the woods for this ” Michigan Holiday”. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded, never point a firearm at anything you don’t intend to shoot, if you are unsure about your target don’t shoot, unload your firearms when not in use, keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot, make sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions, never climb or jump with a loaded firearm, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs when handling firearms, don’t shoot your firearm straight up in the air, don’t shoot at a flat hard surface  or water as it could ricochet, don’t hunt alone, if you hunt alone make sure you take a cell phone or let someone know where you will be and when you expect to return, and teach youngsters proper gun safety.

We tend to look harder at safety while at the workplace and overlook it in our daily personal tasks. Think of what you will miss if you forget about safety and an incident occurs. We all want to go home safely at the end of the day whether we are at work or play.

SPACE, Inc’s 2009 United Way Campaign Goes Over the Top!

Many thanks to the generous staff at SPACE, Inc. for pulling together to make the 2009 United Way Campaign the best ever!  The employee portion of our pledges exceeded last year’s mark by almost $300!  That shows how extremely generous SPACE employees are even in this stagnant economy.  Thank you to SPACE’s owners, Kathie and Lisa, for their corporate donation, too.  What a fantastic team I work with!

The Midland County campaign results will be announced on Thursday, November 12.  This year’s goal is $4.8 million, the same as last year’s, and the United Way office reports that we are ever so close to goal.  We’ll have to wait until next week to find out if we hit it.

I’m thrilled and grateful that the SPACE team came through with flying colors to make this year’s company campaign so successful.   The Midland County agencies that benefit from the United Way campaign will be able to continue their wonderful programs, which are even more important considering the distressed economy in Michigan.   The SPACE team knows how to:

World Chair – NeoCon 2009

The designer of the World Chair from Humanscale explains how he came up with the design of the chair.  The chair is a simple design that is very ergonomic and fits the majority of the public.  SPACE Inc is a dealer for the Humanscale brand.  This chair works great with all of the other ergonomic components Humanscale offers that go along with most office furniture on the market today.   The trend for most businesses is to switch to as much ergonomic furniture as possible for their employees.  Employees are spending much more time at their desks in front of their computer screens.  The use of ergonomic furniture allows the employees to be more productive at their desks and avoid the constant interuptions of getting up to get comfortable or to get the circulation going back in their legs.  Here is a video of the designer of the Humanscale World Chair giving an interview.

SPACE United Way Campaign Snippets

SPACE, Inc. is well into the 2009 United Way campaign.  Our pledges to-date are almost $1500 and we’ve still got 2 weeks to go.  We’re on track to beat last year’s contribution.  Way to make a difference, Team SPACE!

To keep the fire burning, here are a few snippets to show how your donations impact our community:

  • $5       Delivers a hot and healthy meal to a home-bound senior citizen.
  • $10     Supplies two easy-reading books for a young child learning to read.
  • $25     Provides after-hours emergency notification to a soldier serving in the military.
  • $50     Provides a crisis response support person for a rape victim during an exam.
  • $100   Provides over 500 pounds of free food to a local partner agency.
  • $500   Will keep a struggling family warm by providing home heating vouchers.

Keep in mind that the higher dollar amounts referenced can be achieved painlessly by using payroll deductions.  Just $4 per pay period provides $100 to supply a local food pantry with 500 pounds of food.  Every donation counts!  Remember….if you give $10 to buy a Live United paper tshirt, you get to wear jeans on a Friday during the campaign.

Stay tuned for further updates and notes about how you impact your community through your generosity.

“Rack ‘n Roll” Walks for a Cure

Saturday, October 17th, is when the SPACE team, Rack ‘n Roll, will participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Saginaw.

Headed by Linda Anthony, Rack ‘n Roll has been gathering pledges, recruiting walkers, and promoting the event.  This is the second year SPACE has participated in the event, but it’s the first year we have a team name.  Last year we were a loosely-knit group of coworkers and family members.  This year we have a team name and are making a concerted effort to raise more money for the fight against breast cancer.

This inspiring event honors breast cancer survivors, remembers those we’ve lost to the disease, raises awareness, and helps saves lives through pledges.  The event, which starts at 8 am, will be held at Krossroads Park, 5650 Bay Road in Saginaw.  You can park in the WalMart parking lot if you get there early enough.  Otherwise there are other parking lots nearby.

If you aren’t walking, please make a pledge to those who are.  The entire SPACE team can make a difference one way or the other.  Don’t forget to take pictures for future blogs!  Let’s walk!
